Energy Management Engineer

Summit is seeking an Energy Management Engineer in Hampton, VA.  The Energy Management Engineer will be challenged by work that is essential to NASA’s goal of achieving yearly reductions in energy use and the related cost savings, collaborating in a Team Environment under the guidance of NASA Langley’s Energy Manager.

Activities shall include, but not be limited to, the following: •Participating in data calls, meetings, and conference calls at NASA Langley and NASA Headquarters, including oral and written communication (i.e. presentations, whitepapers, etc.) •Performing economic analysis of energy efficiency measures including measuring and verifying Energy Conservation Measure performance, and HVAC system tuning and optimization •Making recommendations of appropriate energy saving measures including lighting, motors, drives, HVAC systems, and industrial process improvements to the NASA Energy Manager •Conducting audits to identify energy reduction opportunities in lighting, HVAC, building envelope, water, renewables, controls, and other energy and water using systems •Performing reviews for design projects, including drawings, specifications, scopes of work, cost estimates, and requests for proposals (RFP’s), to include planning activities associated with project development in order to verify compliance to NASA standards •Preparing comprehensive reports with detailed analytical findings
• Performing utility rate and monthly billing analysis and provide analysis of facility’s historical energy and water use • Conducting building retro-commissioning activities including functional performance testing and monitoring of equipment

Requirements:  US citizenship is required. BS degree in Mechanical (HVAC preferred, but not required) or Electrical engineering and three (3) to five (5) years related engineering experience, or MS degree and two (2) to three (3) years of related engineering experience, or Ph.D. • Ability to be an enthusiastic and participatory Energy Team Member who is able to convey thoughts and ideas both orally and in written form. • Demonstrated data analysis experience (HVAC analysis, building load analysis, Life Cycle Cost Analysis, etc.). • Understanding of basic concepts required for analyzing building envelope, mechanical systems, electrical systems, lighting systems, etc. • Certification, or interest in certification, in any of the following disciplines: Certified Energy Manager, Engineer in Training, or Professional Engineer license. Test/Industrial Environment:  May be exposed to areas of high noise levels, hazardous propellants, explosives, chemicals and industrial facilities. Travel between facilities and test sites is required. Travel between various facilities/test operations is required and may bring exposure to loud noise and potentially hazardous equipment operation (<10%)

Physical Requirements: The ability to enter into confined spaces, crawl into or onto various assemblies while maintaining a clear vision of safety is required. Mechanical Technician

Summit is seeking a Mechanical Technician in Hampton, VA.

Responsibilities: The successful candidate will join a team to operate and maintain mechanical systems/equipment in support of wind tunnels at NASA LaRC safely, effectively, and efficiently. Shall follow safety policies and procedures and perform all work according to existing policies and procedures while maintaining a high standard of quality and workmanship in performing the duties. Working knowledge of safety practices common to industry including FOD control and LOTO (OSHA Lockout/Tagout program) is an added advantage. The successful candidate will be trained in OSHA LOTO responsibilities and become qualified as a LOTO authorized person. Experience in operating and maintaining rotating machinery, hydraulic and pneumatic system, pumps, valves and cooling water systems is desirable. Other equipment operated on includes but is not limited to, industrial forklifts, man-lifts and cranes. Will perform preventive maintenance on, inspection of, and operate equipment per documented procedures. Must be able to read relevant technical drawings and specifications. Relevant military training or aviation maintenance training is a plus.

Requirements:  U.S. Citizenship required. Two (2) years of college with courses in engineering, mathematics, or science, and four (4) years relevant experience, or any equivalent combination of relevant education/experience for a total of six (6) years of experience. Test/Industrial Environment:  May be exposed to areas of high noise levels, high energy sources, hazardous propellants, explosives, chemicals and industrial facilities. (75%) Travel between facilities and during test operations may be required and may bring exposure to loud noise and potentially hazardous equipment and chemical operations (5%)

Physical Requirements: Must have sufficient mobility to enter confined spaces, crawl into or onto various assemblies while maintaining a clear vision of safety is required (50%). Sets up and conducts tests of complete units and components under operational conditions to investigate design proposals for improving equipment performance or other factors, or to obtain data for development, standardization, and quality control.

Sr. Electrical Maintenance and Reliability Engineer

Summit is seeking a Sr. Electrical Maintenance and Reliability Engineer in Hampton, VA.  While the majority of work is directly in support of LaRC, other industry partners and Government agencies may be supported at remote sites as directed by the Contracting Officer (CO). The Center Maintenance, Operations, and Engineering (CMOE) contract comprises of three major categories of work – operations, maintenance, and engineering (OME).

The Electrical Maintenance and Reliability Engineer is expected have a working knowledge of electrical systems maintenance practices and poses problem solving and troubleshooting skills.

Key Responsibilities:  •Developing procedures for major overhauls and technically complex repairs of critical electrical equipment• Troubleshoot equipment and system problems including high voltage distribution systems, electrical control systems, drive systems and building power systems •Analysis of system/equipment performance as compared to design criteria •Conduct root cause failure analysis, develop action plan to eliminate repeat failures, and implement corrective actions •Establishing and driving reliability engineering principles and best work practices • Development and oversight of preventive and predictive maintenance procedures • Identify key areas for reliability improvements • Provide technical input to the Engineering Design Department on the selection and installation of equipment and systems based on reliability improvements and industry best practices • Apply engineering standards in evaluating facility, system and equipment conditions. Coach and develop personnel in changing from reactive to proactive maintenance • Independently plans, schedules, and conducts or coordinates detailed phases of engineering work through the selection and adaptation or modification of techniques, procedures, and criteria • Analyzes complex features of the work and applies principles and practices of the discipline or devises new approaches in problem solutions • Thoroughly reviews all results from assigned tasks and determine if outputs are complete, correct, integrated with project objectives, and adequately documented • May direct other engineers, engineering associates, technicians, designers, draftsmen, clerical personnel, etc., assigned to project team or tasks.

Qualifications: BS degree in Electrical Engineering and eight (8) to twelve (12) years related engineering experience, or a MS degree and seven (7) to ten (10) years of related engineering experience or Ph.D. and two (2) to five (5) years of related engineering experience.

Essential Functions: Work Environment Office environment (90%) Test Environment- May be exposed to areas of high noise levels, hazardous propellants, explosives, chemicals, steam, high pressure lines, and industrial facilities. Wind Tunnel Electrical Technician

Summit is seeking a Wind Tunnel Electrical Technician in Hampton, VA.

Responsibilities: Must be familiar with high voltage systems, rotating machinery, hydraulic and cooling water systems and a variety of electrical equipment such as, switchboards, controllers, circuit breakers, motors, heating units, relays, conduit systems or other equipment including Programmable Logic Controllers.

Specific Skills and Responsibilities: •Work from blueprints, drawings, layouts or other specifications
• Locate and diagnose trouble in the electrical system or equipment. • Work standard computations relating to load requirements of wiring or electrical equipment. • Use a variety of hand tools, measurement and test equipment. • Must be able to read/understand technical diagrams and drawings and be knowledgeable about the local codes and regulations, as well as National Electrical Code requirements. • Must also be physically capable of bending for long periods of time, climb ladders, work in confined spaces, lift 35 lbs., and be willing to work all shifts and overtime. • Knowledge of OSHA Lockout/Tagout program and familiarization with Programmable Logic Controls (PLC) or equivalent systems is a plus. Journeyman or Masters License is a plus. • Good communication skills, detail-oriented, able to work with a team, and have good problem-solving skills.

Qualifications:  External U.S. Citizenship required. Two (2) years of college with courses in engineering, mathematics, or science, or four (4) years relevant experience, or any equivalent combination of relevant education/experience for a total of six (6) years. Previous experience with computer terminals is highly desirable.

Work Environment: Office environment (10%). Test/Industrial Environment – May be exposed to areas of high noise levels, hazardous propellants, explosives, chemicals, and industrial facilities. (85%) Travel between facilities and test operations may be required and may bring exposure to loud noise and potentially hazardous equipment and chemical operations. (5%)

Information Assurance and Security Lead Associate

Summit is seeking an Information Assurance and Security, Lead Associate to join the Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) Ground Sustainment Services (LGSS) program to add to our distinguished team to sustain and enhance the Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS) Common Ground System (CGS).  The JPSS CGS is responsible for implementing JPSS Program command, control, and communications and data processing requirements for JPSS CGS-serviced missions.  The JPSS is the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) next-generation operational Earth observation Program that acquires and distributes global environmental data from multiple polar-orbiting satellites, playing a critical role to NOAA’s mission to understand and predict changes in weather, climate, oceans, coasts, and space environments, which supports the Nation’s economy and protection of lives and property.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical services for the NOAA FISMA High system computers and networks including: software/hardware patching and NIST 800-53 high-impact security control configurations.
  • Support the NOAA cyber security mission by building, configuring, troubleshooting, and updating the network security capabilities that protect NOAA core networks and information.
  • Monitor network connectivity and ensure high quality data transmission using standard network tools.
  • Create the established network security processes to defend and operate the national NOAA network.
  • Provide technical expertise to large or complex projects.
  • Establish and maintain standard operating procedures for operations team members.
  • Must have network and firewall engineering experience with designing, implementation, and maintaining Layer 2 and 3 networking devices and/or firewall devices.

 Required Qualifications:

Senior Software Engineer

Systems Engineering & Integration (SE&I) Engineer

Summit is currently looking for Systems Engineering & Integration (SE&I) engineers to support the COMET contract.  This contract provides overall management and implementation of ground systems capabilities, flight hardware processing, and launch operations at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. These tasks will support the International Space Station, Ground Systems Development and Operations, and the Space Launch System, Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle, and Launch Services programs.

The Systems Engineering & Integration (SE&I) Engineer position is responsible for providing engineering and technical integration support to a broad range of SE&I work assignments to ensure group products and services are provided to meet NASA customer expectations.

Areas of responsibility include but are not limited to:

  1. Engineering design and development practices.
  2. Preparation of basic design documentation.
  3. Assist higher level engineers in technical evaluations, engineering calculations, and requirements reviews.
  4. Development of basic requirements in support of projects assigned.
  5. Receive guidance and mentorship on conventional/basic SE&I engineering tasks.
  6. Responsible for end-to-end technical integration of requirements through the product lifecycle with guidance from SE&I Process Leads.
  7. Responsible to review, impact, control and document any requirements changes.

Job Requirements
